COURSE MAPRace Starts
Half Marathon Start: 10:00 amFive Mile Start: 9:30 am
The Half Marathon course starts approximately 11 miles up Hwy 128 from Moab, just after Take Out Beach on the Colorado River. The course follows the river to Hwy 191, then turns east and heads to the finish at Swanny City Park in downtown Moab. The Five Mile course follows the last 5 miles of the Half Marathon course; the two races share a finish line.
Time Limit / Road Closure
There is a time limit of 3 hours and 15 minutes.Due to safety concerns and permitting requirements, in 2012, the Canyonlands Half Marathon course will have strictly enforced cutoff times at miles 3, 6, 9 and 10.6 (turnoff from Hwy 128 to 191). Hwy 128 is winding with no shoulder in some sections, so it is imperative that all runners be off the road by 12:45. A pace of 14:53/mile or faster will meet the cutoff times. A cushion of 5 minutes is built into the cutoff times to account for the time it takes a runner at the 10+ min/mile pace signs to cross the starting mat after the gun has gone off.
Race Start 10 am
Mile 3 Cutoff 50 minutes 14:53/mile pace plus 5 minutes
Mile 6 Cutoff 1 hr 35 minutes 14:53/mile pace plus 5 minutes
Mile 9 Cutoff 2 hr 20 minutes 14:53/mile pace plus 5 minutes
Hwy 128 / Hwy 191 2 hr 43 minutes 14:53/mile pace plus 5 minutes
If you do not make a cutoff, you MUST board the Sweep Vehicle. Keep in mind that course services including aid stations and medical will also be discontinued once the Sweep Vehicle comes through. The finish line closes at 1:15 pm. Finish line food and services will be available only to those finishing within the allotted time limit.Hwy 128 is closed to traffic from 8 am to 1 pm between Mile Post 12 and Hwy 191.
Timing
Both races are timed using electronic strips affixed to the back of the bib and timing mats at the starts and finish.Official results are based on gun time.
Runners must line up at the start according to the mile pace markers.
Course Support
Aid stations are at HM miles 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 and have water, Gatorade Endurance Formula and port-a-potties. Clif shots in various flavors are available just before the mile 6 aid station.Medical staff is stationed along the course, at the intersection of Hwy. 128 and 191 and at the finish line.
Not Allowed on the Course
Strollers, baby joggers, bikes, skates, scooters, vehicles, runners moving upriver and animals are not allowed.
We strongly recommend that, if you choose to listen to a portable music player at our events you keep the volume low and/or wear only 1 earbud. This is a safety issue—you need to be able to hear the runners around you and any safety or medical vehicles (including bikes) that are trying to move along the course.
